I think one of the most traumatic things for my Mom when she moved in with me was changing doctors. She had the same doctor for, I don't know, 40 years I think. I liked him very much for mostly one reason. He did everything possible to keep her living on her own for as long as he could because he hated the thought of her going to a nursing home. For that alone I loved the guy and so did my Mom.
So once I got her moved in with me I searched for a doctor that specialized in the elderly and found this very young doc. It took a long time before Mom trusted anything he said.
And what is a bit frustrating for me is she still goes by what her old doctor said and nothing can convince her otherwise.
Case in point: When her old doctor prescribed a heart pill it was the kind that needed to be taken separate from meals. Somewhere in the span of time in and out of the hospital they switched her to a heart pill that can be taken with meals. Trying to convince her it is o.k. to take with meals is futile, I have determined. I called the old Walgreen's she used to get her meds from, I called two Walgreen's here, I called her new doc to verify, and finally called her old doctor but just talked to his nurse. Mom is still not convinced and I don't think she will be unless she actually talks to her old doctor in person or on the phone.
So she is still trying to work the heart pill in after meals and often forgets so I come home to her not have taken it.
I hate to bother her old doctor but it seems I will have to. Boy, sometimes the elderly can get stubborn.
Another issue arose today. On T.V. today she caught the end of a warning that certain pain patches were recalled. So I get on the internet and sure enough there is a recall but by a different manufacturer than the one she uses. To be on the safe side I called Walgreen's and called her current doctor and they all confirmed hers were not the ones recalled.
She still was very skeptical. I asked her who else I can call so she would feel comfortable using the patch. She didn't have any suggestions but I knew she wasn't happy. She did let me change it tonight but I feel bad she is still worried and in that mix I'm a little frustrated.
I think they sometimes get fixated on things and just can't let go.
I'm not really going anywhere with this. Just sharing some of the things that goes on in the caring of my Mom for those of you who may, down the road, may be in the same boat. Be prepared, they are stubborn sometimes. ROTFL
