Traveling with Your Loved One with a Memory Disorder
Traveling can be a stressful event alone, but it is even more stressful during the holidays. The following tips are provided by Franklin County Home Care Corporation:
♦ Get an identification tag for your loved one in case you get separated.
♦ Keep routine as familiar as possible—meal times and bed times.
♦ Bring a brief medical history that is easily accessible. Make sure it lists your primary care provider and contact info, and allergy info.
♦ Minimize time spent in large, noisy groups.
♦ Limit travel time. If you plan to travel four or more hours, have two caregivers. Bring familiar items to help calm them down.
♦ If flying, rely on nonstop flights and request a middle seat for your companion.
♦ In hotels, ask for rooms without sliding glass doors and let the front desk know someone with a memory disorder is with you in case of an emergency.
