That was a great article. I am one of those people who always got several estimates. I really didn't think about the repercussions that may bring. I was smart enough to make sure they have been in business a fairly long time, checked with the BBB, asked for proof of insurance, and most of the time tried to hire someone by recommendation.
I guess I always feared I would be "taken" because I'm a woman and just don't know about certain things and how much it should "really" cost.
I just want to add, my BIL is a very good brick layer and works his butt off on a job. But his business is a tricky one where he comes in after certain things are done on the construction of a home and if those things weren't completed as scheduled then he has no income coming in. It is very difficult to find a job to fill that vacant time so he ends up having to ask for some of the money fairly soon once he starts the job just because he doesn't have the money to get supplies. So just because they may be asking for money fairly "up-front" doesn't mean they are poor business managers or will do a bad job. Something I need to keep in my mind next time I have to hire someone for a job - I need to stop assuming they are "out to get me". LOL
